Congratulations to graduate student Maria Rosa for being awarded an honorable mention for best student presentation at the recent Aquaculture 2010 meeting in San Diego, CA. Maria’s talk, “Effects of Particle Surface Properties on the Feeding Selectivity of the Eastern Oyster Crassostrea virginica and the Blue Mussel Mytilus edulis,” was presented in an invited session on interactions between bivalve molluscs and their environment, and received much positive response.

Amina Troare and Udonna Ndu have been awarded a Center for Environmental Sciences and Engineering (CESE), Multidisciplinary Environmental Research Grant for Graduate Students. Amina will work with Hans Dam and I and her research is focused on mercury in Long Island Sound. UD will be working with Dr Yu Lei in engineering and I on further examining methylmercury uptake into microorganisms using his bioreporter.
